Charlotte Maxeke Medical Research Cluster

CMeRC-HTA Unit conducts health technology assessment for public sector institutions as a part of its service and research program. These assessments are performed by qualified researchers and in multidisciplinary team and includes information on use, safety and quality, costs and impacts of services and technologies applicable to South African health care system. The health technologies that are examined by the team include devices, procedures and organizational systems; however priority is given to those topics that are of high relevance to the health policy decisions determined by the end-users and policy makers. The following aspects are examined during an assessment:

  • Clinical effectiveness,
  • Safety
  • Efficacy and efficiency (economic assessment)
  • Social, legal, organizational and ethical implications

It unit also conducts research on developing methodology guidelines of different aspect of health technology assessment.
